He\u2019s a neuroscientist, and he works as a professor of Neurobiology and Ophthalmology at Stanford University. He\u2019ll help us to understand our minds better so nothing can stop us from achieving the greatness inside each one of us. It helped me so much, and I\u2019m sure it\u2019ll do the same for you, so let\u2019s get to it!<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Who Is Andrew Huberman?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Andrew Huberman is a neuroscientist at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.stanford.edu\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stanford University<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. He also runs the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hubermanlab.com\/index.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Huberman Lab<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which studies how the brain functions, how it changes through experiences, and how to repair the brain after injury or disease.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In his career, Andrew has made many important contributions to the fields of brain development, brain plasticity, and neural regeneration, and repair. He\u2019s received numerous awards and recognitions for his research and publications, including the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mcknight.org\/programs\/the-mcknight-endowment-fund-for-neuroscience\/scholar-awards\/#:~:text=The%20McKnight%20Scholar%20Awards%20encourage,an%20M.D.%20and%2For%20Ph.&text=degree%3B%20have%20completed%20formal%20postdoctoral,demonstrate%20a%20commitment%20to%20neuroscience.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">McKnight Foundation Neuroscience Scholar Award<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewtrusts.org\/en\/projects\/pew-biomedical-scholars\/program-details\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Biomedical Scholar Award<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewtrusts.org\/en\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pew Charitable Trusts<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arvo.org\/awards-grants-and-fellowships\/arvo-achievement-awards\/#:~:text=Cogan%20Award%20%2D%20established%20in%201988,treatment%20of%20human%20eye%20disease.&text=Cogan%20Award%20recipients%20are%20eligible,awards%20at%20a%20later%20date.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cogan Award for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to being a tenured professor of Neurobiology and Ophthalmology at Stanford, Dr. Andrew is a brilliant neuroscientist and teacher \u2014 he excellently explains complicated concepts so that everyday people can understand them and use neuroscience to improve their lives!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Andrew\u2019s goal is to understand how the brain allows us to sense, evaluate, and respond to the world around us. He\u2019s actively working on methods to re-wire and repair eye-to-brain connections for people who suffer from blinding diseases as well as investigating emotions and how they drive human behavior.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Andrew is clearly an expert on how the human brain works \u2014 I can\u2019t wait for him to share his wisdom with you today!<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>You Cannot Control the Mind With the Mind<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When things are really tough in life, how do you deal with them? Do you tell yourself to stop feeling your feelings? Does the line \u201cCalm down\u201d work on you? Do you sleep on it? We all deal with stress differently. But for Andrew Huberman, there\u2019s a proper way of handling this:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhen you're stressed, and you tell yourself, \u2018Don't stress,\u2019 or, \u2018Calm down,\u2019 that rarely works. \u2026 It usually has the opposite effect, and it can be damaging for relationships. \u201d &#8211;<\/span><b> Andrew Huberman<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, I think that this is something new. We\u2019ve been taught all along that when we feel stressed, we should tell ourselves that we should calm down or that we should relax. But what Andrew was telling us, is somewhat the opposite of our practice. He tells us to take a different approach \u2014 top-down control. I asked him what it\u2019s all about, and here\u2019s his answer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere is an interesting principle that states, \u201cYou cannot control the mind with the mind. What you should do instead is to look to the body. The nervous system includes the brain but also all the connections to the body and back again. So, when you can't control your mind, you want to do something purely mechanical, like the physiological side. Once you take control of the body in that way, then the mind starts to fall under the umbrella of this top-down control.\u201d &#8211;<\/span><b> Andrew Huberman<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Top-down control can only be done through the presence of a fully functional and matured prefrontal brain. It allows for us to have a brake over our limbic system, which is the part of our brain responsible for our behavior and emotions. He further explains why this top-down approach to life\u2019s stressful events is the most effective there is.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cTrying to control the mind with the mind is like trying to grab fog. It's just going to keep moving. \u2026 The key is to take control of a real physical entity \u2014 the phrenic nerve. This skill isn't something that you build up over time, because you literally have a set of wires that goes down to your diaphragm that can move your lungs. When you decide that [you\u2019re] going to use the physiological side to calm [yourself], that\u2019s top-down control. By using your phrenic nerve, you\u2019re able to control the cortex that controls the limbic system. You're taking control of your internal landscape rather than trying to take control of your thinking.\u201d &#8211;<\/span><b> Andrew Huberman<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This information is truly empowering. How often do we feel powerless, particularly in stressful and traumatic situations? Some of us might find ourselves easily frustrated, mad, and at times, just giving up. Worse, we feel enslaved by the circumstances we are in or the emotions we\u2019re experiencing. We forget that there\u2019s greatness within us.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By not using our minds to control our minds, we are able to process things better.
